The 2009 Tony season officially ended April 30 in the black, racking up $861,310,274 compared to $837,434,838 for the previous season. For the week, box offices reported $18,101,244, a dip from the previous week’s $19,223,496.

The list of leading productions was a rubber stamp of last week’s list: Wicked at the Gershwin, West Side Story at the Palace, Billy Elliot at the Imperial, The Lion King at the Minskoff and Jersey Boys at the August Wilson. A whopping nine productions saw attendance at 95 percent or better, all musicals with the exception of God of Carnage playing at the Jacobs which racked up more than $778,000, the most of any play. Impressive considering the Jacobs Theatre has only the fifth largest seating capacity of any theater hosting a play. Seeing a dismal 31 percent audience capacity was the play Reasons to be Pretty at the Lyceum.

The 63rd Tony Award nominations are big news this week and were announced on Wednesday. “Billy Elliot” is in the lead with 15 nominations for the ‘Best Musical’ and is competing with Shrek the Musical at the Broadway, Next to Normal at the Booth and Rock of Ages at the Brooks Atkinson. ‘Best Play’ nominees include 33 Variations at the Eugene O’Neill, “Dividing the Estate,” “God of Carnage” and “Reasons to be Pretty.” There are 27 categories, which include ‘Best Revival of a Musical’, ‘Best Revival of a Play’, ‘Best Book of a Musical’, ‘Best Original Score written for the Theater’, ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play’, ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play’ and numerous others. Look for the live broadcast on CBS beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 from Radio City Music Hall.
