This week, the New Yankee Stadium once again took the number one spot in TicketNews’ exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, May 23. Ousted by NHL and NBA playoff venues for the past two weeks, the stadium regained the leader position that it had held for the prior two weeks due to solid sales for New York Yankees tickets. Yankees ticket sales were strong enough to keep the team at number one in TicketNews’ Top Sports Events rankings for the fifth consecutive week. The New Yankee Stadium finished the week with a power score of 3.05.

Another New York City venue, the Gershwin Theatre, showed upward mobility this week, up three spots to number two and power scoring a 2.30. The Gershwin is Broadway’s home to the popular award-winning musical Wicked, whose receipts keep the Gershwin in the rankings’ top five or higher week after week.

Making a big jump from last week’s number six, Madison Square Garden (MSG) took number three in this week’s rankings. MSG has an impressive roster of top-selling musical acts arriving in the upcoming months, including James Taylor and Carole King in June, Lady Gaga in July, and Justin Bieber in August. The WWE tour, hitting at number seven in this week’s Top Sports, also arrives in June. MSG power scored a 2.20 this week.

Strong playoff performances by the Chicago Blackhawks took the United Center to number four in the rankings this week. This weekend, the Blackhawks’ home ice hosted games three and four of their four-game sweep of the San Jose Sharks in a series that made it to number six in this week’s Top Sports rankings. The venue also will be home to games one and two, and, if necessary, games five and seven, of the Hawks’ upcoming Stanley Cup finals against the Philadelphia Flyers. In music, the Center will host James Taylor and Carole King in July and Roger Waters for three shows in September. The United Center power scored a 1.92 this week.

The Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York moved up two to take the number five spot this week. Power scoring a 1.91, the outdoor amphitheatre’s summer schedule includes dates by the popular American Idols Live tour in July and the Jonas Brothers with Demi Lovato in August.

Next in the rankings, the TD Garden (Fleet Center) in Boston, MA, took a dip this week, down four to the number six spot. Hometown favorites the Boston Celtics, are in Eastern Conference finals play against the Orlando Magic, leading the Magic 3-1 in a series that made it to number four in the Top Sports Events rankings. In the past week, the Garden hosted games three and four of the series and will host a game six, if necessary, later this week. In concerts, the Garden has James Taylor and Carole King in June, Lady Gaga in July, and Roger Waters in September. The TD Garden (Fleet Center) power scored a 1.80 this week.

Down three to number seven this week, the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, has its Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals against the Phoenix Suns. In a series which made it to number nine in this week’s Top Sports, the Lakers lead the Suns 2-1. Last week, Staples hosted games one and two of the Western Conference finals and will host a game five and seven later this week, if necessary. In music, Staples will have Lady Gaga and the American Idols Live tour in August, and Roger Waters will perform for two dates in November. The WWE tour also arrives in August. The Staples Center power scored a 1.45 this week.

The Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA, fell hard this week, down from its number one perch of last week to number eight. Power scoring a 1.41, the center is home to the Philadelphia Flyers, who defeated the Montreal Canadiens in their Eastern Conference Finals match-up, 4 games to 1. The center hosted games one, two and five of the series (with the break for games three and four likely contributing to its free fall in the rankings this week). The venue will have games three, four, and a possible six of the Stanley Cup finals against the Blackhawks. In music, the Wachovia Center will have James Taylor and Carole King in June, the American Idols Live tour in July and Lady Gaga in September. The popular WWE tour also stops at the Center in June.

Rio Tinto Stadium debuted in the top ten this week, arriving in the number nine spot and power scoring a 1.39. The Stadium is home to professional soccer’s Real Salt Lake team, and it also has a stop on the summer tour of Paul McCartney in July.

AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA, also debuted this week, finishing out the list at number ten. The ballpark is home to Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, and it will host Paul McCartney for one show in July. AT&T Park power scored a 1.37 this week.

As the NHL and NBA battle it out in the finals, their playoff venues had solid performances this week in the rankings, pushing several baseball stadiums out of the top ten for the time being. The Gershwin Theatre remains the sole theater venue in the top ten this week.

TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales for venues from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given venue’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales for a venue, and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare venues within a particular category.
