PRESS RELEASE: “Zillow.com® Appoints Kathleen Philips as General Counsel”
SEATTLE, WA (PRNewswire) August 13, 2010 — Leading real estate website Zillow.com® today announced the appointment of Kathleen Philips as general counsel. Philips, 43, brings extensive experience running corporate law and other departments in leading startup and mid-stage companies, including FanSnap, Pure Digital Technologies, StubHub and Hotwire.com. She will report to Zillow®’s Chief Operating Officer Spencer Rascoff and oversee all the company’s legal affairs, including corporate governance, partnership agreements, intellectual property rights and compliance matters.
“Kathleen’s range of legal and operating experience in high-growth technology companies makes her the ideal person to head Zillow’s legal efforts as we continue to grow and expand our capabilities,” said Rascoff, who previously worked with Philips at Hotwire. “We’re thrilled to welcome such a high-caliber pro to our executive team and I’m personally excited to work with Kathleen again.”
Philips most recently was general counsel at FanSnap, Inc., a venture capital-backed ticket search engine, where she handled securities law compliance and legal issues relating to investor relations, corporate finance, human resources and technology licensing. In addition, Philips was responsible for customer support, online marketing, and finance operations. During her tenure, she also led lobbying efforts to transform state and federal ticket resale laws.
Before FanSnap, Philips was general counsel at Pure Digital Technologies, the maker of Flip Video cameras acquired by Cisco in 2009, where she handled board and stockholder issues, securities law compliance and intellectual property litigation, among other legal matters. Prior to that, Philips served as general counsel for StubHub, the online ticket marketplace acquired by eBay in 2007. She also served as general counsel at Hotwire.com, where she led the legal team in the negotiation and closing of the company’s $657 million acquisition by InterActiveCorp in 2003.
Philips has also provided outside general counsel services to a wide variety of start-up and mid-stage companies, including TripIt, Inc. and Linden Labs, the maker of Second Life. Philips received her Juris Doctor with Honors from University of Chicago Law School, and received her bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of California, Berkeley.
“Zillow is a technology innovator and one of the most influential brands in online real estate. I am excited to join such a highly respected team and support the company’s continued growth,” said Philips.
Zillow.com is an online real estate marketplace where homeowners, buyers, sellers, renters, real estate agents and mortgage professionals find and share vital information about homes and mortgages. Launched in early 2006 with Zestimate® home values and data on millions of U.S. homes, Zillow has since added homes for sale and homes for rent, a directory of real estate and lending professionals, Zillow Advice and Zillow Mortgage Marketplace. One of the most-visited U.S. real estate websites, with nearly 12 million unique visitors per month, Zillow’s goal is to help people become smarter about homes and real estate in every stage of their lives — home buying, selling, renting, remodeling and financing. The company is headquartered in Seattle and has raised $87 million in funding.
