With the holiday season in full swing, the 36 productions on The Great White Way continue to be a strong draw.
Despite falling short of last week’s huge total of $26,365,120, the gross ticket sales on Broadway this past week reached an impressive total of $23,445,869. Looking at this point in the season last year, box office ticket sales were $548,670,020 compared to the current season of $555,557,383.
Seven productions reported ticket sales of over $1 million. Those productions were Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, Jersey Boys at the August Wilson, Elf at the Hirschfeld, Promises, Promises at the Broadway, The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst and Billy Elliot at the Imperial. Attendance was down almost two percentage points from 74.3 percent to 72.6 percent for the week.
The production reporting the largest increase in ticket sales over the previous week was Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark in its second week of previews, up $718,853 to $919,457. Opening night will take place on January 11. Looking at the percentages, The Scottsboro Boys at the Lyceum saw an 18 percent increase in capacity while the Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic saw a nearly a 26 percent drop.
“Jersey Boys” achieved the highest Gross Gross Potential, 105.6 percent, followed by “The Merchant of Venice” at 101.8 percent. “The Lion King” and “Wicked” also reported 100 percent or better numbers.
Eight productions posted Top Tickets at $300, with one of those, “Jersey Boys” offering a ticket at $350. The Best Buy Ticket as suggested by the Average Paid Admission was the play The Pitmen Painters at the Friedman.
