As nine productions closed their doors on January 2, Broadway ticket sales total dropped dramatically, falling more than $14 million. Ticket sales this past week reached $20,750,906, compared to the previous week’s huge total of $34,998,821. Despite the huge difference, the week was still a success when compared to last season’s total of $18,754,209 for the same week.
Six shows reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million including (in order): “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods Theatre, $1,588,514; “Wicked” at the Gershwin, $1,588,456; “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,550,640; “The Merchant of Venice” at the Broadhurst, $1,114,050; “In the Heights” at the Richard Rodgers, $1,083,254; and “Jersey Boys” at the August Wilson, $1,068,423.
The three shows achieving highest marks for reaching or exceeding 100 percent of their Gross Gross Potential were “The Merchant of Venice” at 104.48 percent, “The Lion King” at 101.57 percent and “Wicked” at 101.40 percent.
Seven shows posted tickets with face values at or exceeding $300, while the best bargain priced average ticket was $52.22 for “A Free Man of Color”.
Two shows will be opening soon: “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the American Airlines on January 13 and “Spider-Man” on February 7.
On hiatus at this time are two shows: “The Merchant of Venice,” which will resume performances on February 1; and “Rock of Ages,” which has been running at the Atkinson Theatre, but will reopen March 24 at the Helen Hayes.
