Broadway box offices continue to see uneven ticket sales, which go up one week and down the next. This past week ticket sales slumped slightly from $20,858,828 the week of August 8 to 14 to $20,079,820. The number of productions remains steady at 24 including three plays. The musical “Follies” at the Marquis remains in previews with opening night scheduled for September 12.

This past week, five productions reported box office returns in excess of $1 million, although all also reported a decrease in sales from last week. Those productions were “Wicked” at the Gershwin reporting $1,820,989 down from $1,886,230 the previous week; “The Lion King” at the Minskoff reporting $1,7990,309 down from $1,842,424; “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods, $1,567,344 down from $1,722,074; “The Book of Mormon” at the Eugene O’Neill $1,274,244 down from $1,289,948; and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” at the Al Hirschfeld $1,183,669 down from $1,224,686.

Again, Tyne Daly’s star-turn in “Master Class” at the Friedman reported the lowest return at the box office, $280,729 down from $320,785.

Seven productions posted small gains in ticket sales compared to the previous week, while 17 posted a drop in revenue. The play “Jerusalem” at the Music Box saw the largest bump dollar wise from one week to the next, an increase of $126,302 over the previous week. The musical “Spider-Man” experienced the largest drop in ticket sales, down $154,730.

TFL and ATBS for ticketing professionals

Six productions posted 95 percent or better attendance although overall attendance on the Great White Way dropped again from 83.49 to 82.07 percent. “The Book of Mormon” reported attendance at 102.43 percent again followed by “How to Succeed in Business” at 100.42 percent with “War Horse” at 100 percent. “Hair” continued to report the lowest capacity at 57.3 percent.

Again this week four productions met or exceeded their Gross Gross Potential at 95 percent or better. The same three productions posting 100 percent or more as the previous week’s numbers were “Wicked” at 116.25 percent, “The Book of Mormon” at 107.22 percent and “The Lion King” at 105.92 percent. Reporting the lowest percentage was “Hair” at the St. James at 32.37 percent.

“The Book of Mormon” still leads in top ticket price with its top ticket offered at $477, followed by “How to Succeed in Business” at $302, with “The Addams Family” and “Wicked” continuing to post highs of $300. “Hair” offered the best bargain-priced average ticket this reporting period at $48.47.
