TicketNews has released its exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, February 28, and the Hollywood Bowl took the top ten by storm, grabbing the number one spot and power scoring an impressive 4.04. Boosting the Bowl’s numbers are two dates on the very popular Paul McCartney tour (at number two in this week’s Top Concert Events and Top Events) later this month and three from the Eagles(at number seven) in April, as well as a stop on the Dave Matthews Band tour (leading both the Top Concerts and Top Events rankings) in August.
Madison Square Garden (MSG) was knocked out of the number one spot it held for two weeks post-Super Bowl, dropping it to number two with a power score of 3.13. A performance from the Black Eyed Peas (at number nine in this week’s Top Concerts) last week kept MSG’s numbers strong, as does tonight’s date from Jay-Z (at number five). MSG also is home to hometown faves the New York Knicks, at number seven in TicketNews’ Top Sports Events rankings this week, and New York Rangers.
Ice hockey’s medal rounds at Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics took General Motors (GM) Place up one to the number three slot this week. The venue, renamed Canada Hockey Place for the duration of the games, hosted both the men’s and women’s Olympic ice hockey tournaments, providing the first NHL-sized rink in the competition’s history. GM Place drew big crowds last week as both the men’s and women’s series reached their medal rounds, with the men’s gold final taking number one in this week’s Top Sports Events. The Canadian men and women each took home gold from these finals, driving their home country fans wild. General Motors Place power scored a 2.08 this week.
Perennial top-fiver the Gershwin Theatre in New York City dropped one this week to number four, power scoring a 1.96. Broadway’s home to the long running hit musical Wicked continues to benefit from the show’s big box office receipts week after week.
L.A.’s Staples Center held steady at number five this week, power scoring a 1.87. Staples is home to the NBA’s Pacific Division leading Los Angeles Lakers (at number five in Top Sports this week) and the Los Angeles Clippers as well as the NHL’s LA Kings. In mid-March, the venue will host fan favorite the WWE tour (number three in this week’s Top Sports). In music, Staples has dates on the tours of Jon Bon Jovi (at number eight in this week’s Top Concerts) this week and Taylor Swift (at number six) in April.
Next in the rankings was Reliant Stadium in Houston, TX, coming in at number six. Over the coming weeks the Stadium is host to the Houston Rodeo, with the Black Eyed Peas making a March 18 appearance. Later this month, college basketball fans will see the NCAA Tournament’s South Regionals played at the venue. Reliant Stadium power scored a 1.61 this week.
The TD Garden (Fleet Center) in Boston, MA dropped one this week to finish at number seven with a power score of 1.45. The Garden is home to the Boston Bruins and the Atlantic division leading Boston Celtics, who came in at number nine in this week’s Top Sports rankings. In concerts, the Garden has Jay-Z next week and James Taylor and Carole King for two dates in June.
The Sprint Center made its debuted in the top ten this week, finishing at number eight and power scoring a 1.34. Coming up next week, the venue will host the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament. As a performance venue, the Center has a star-studded line up in the coming months, including Bon Jovi and the Black Eyed Peas in March and Taylor Swift and George Strait with Reba McIntyre (at number three in Top Concerts this week) in April.
The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV resurfaced in the top ten this week, hitting at number nine and power scoring a 1.26. The Arena will host Bon Jovi this weekend and the Eagles in April, with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley bout coming on May 1.
Rounding out the top ten this week was the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO. With a power score of 1.25, the Center is home to Northwest Division leaders the Denver Nuggets, at number eight in this week’s Top Sports rankings, as well as the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. The venue will see dates from Jon Bon Jovi next week, Taylor Swift in April and the Eagles in May.
Basketball, hockey and indoor concert venues continue to rule the rankings. The reappearance of outdoor amphitheatre the Hollywood Bowl brings hope once again that summer can’t be far away. The Gershwin remains the sole theater venue in the top ten this week.
