The University of Connecticut football team, which played in the January 1 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, lost more than $1.6 million for playing in the game. The contest, which UConn lost to Oklahoma 48-20, marked the school’s first ever appearance in the Bowl Championship Series. According to the Hartford Courant, the team only sold about 4,600 tickets of the 10,000 the school was allocated, and with other expenses the loss amounted to more than the $1.6 million. However, school officials, who predicted the shortfall, said the exposure the team received from playing on national television on New Year’s Day more than made up for the lost revenue.
