Following the holiday rush, Broadway box office sales took a slight decline last week, dropping 28 percent to $31 million, Deadline reports.
Attendance reportedly dropped to 259,101, which fell 18 percent from the previous week, Deadline noted in a report from the trade group Broadway League. The show roster has decreased from 36 shows to 29 shows, which likely has to do with the decrease in sales. Additionally, ticket prices were generally lower than those during the holidays.
Nonetheless, some plays rose to the occasion and continued to be top-runners on the Great White Way, including David Byrne’s Utopia, which is set to close on February 16, pulling in $1.1 million. Beetlejuice, another show set to close this year, continues to remain a hot-commodity, selling-out with $1.2 million in sales.
New shows will open before the end of the month, including A Soldier’s Play at the American Airlines Theatre and Grand Horizons at the Helen Hayes. Other shows on the horizon include Girl From the North Country, Six, Company, and Mrs. Doubtfire, set to take the place of Freestyle Love Supreme and The Sound Inside, which just wrapped-up earlier this month. Theater fans can also look out for some recently-announced shows in-the-works like The Nanny and Last Summer At Bluefish Cove.
