Country performer and American Idol judge Luke Bryan announced that he had tested positive for COVID and would subsequently miss Monday’s return of American Idol live airings, informing fans with a tweet on Monday afternoon.

“I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show,” read his twitter announcement. “I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon.”

The show saw longtime Idol judge Paula Abdul step in as a guest alongside Lionel Richie and Katy Perry in Bryan’s absence. In a social media post, the show said he “will be missed” and that he is “resting now in quarantine at home.”

What is unclear is how long Bryan may be out of the Idol rotation. Also unknown is what impact the illness may have on his upcoming performance dates. Currently, he has shows on his touring schedule beginning in late May, with numerous dates on his Proud to Be Right Here tour scheduled throughout the summer and into the fall. The dates were pushed from 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.
