GREASE begins previews tonight at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and opens on August 19th. After all the media hoopla, beginning with the first-time-ever nation-wide casting call via television, two new leads were selected: Max Crumm will play the part of Danny Zuko and Laura Osnes will play Sandy Dumbrowski.

The five highest grossing productions on Broadway this past week were: Wicked $1,472,649 at 100% capacity; The Lion King $1,283,279 at 100%; Mary Poppins $1,226,944 at 100%; Jersey Boys $1,197,014 at 100%; and Beauty and the Beast $1,139,499 at 100% capacity.

Also coming close to filling every seat was Hairspray $865,744 at 100% capacity, Mamma Mia! $935,608 at 100%; Spring Awakening $783,104 at 98%; and The Phantom of the Opera $825,482 at just over 96%. . .

Xanadu saw a whopping 12.5% increase in attendance this past week, boosting its bottom line from $230,521 in the previous reporting period to $295,463 this week.

Still struggling in spite of a sterling cast was Deuce at $178,253, down $15,308 from the previous week. It posted the lowest attendance at 42%, although this number reflects only a 1% drop. Deuce, a “strictly limited engagement,” will close on August 19th.

Broadway’s ticket sales reached a total of $18,697,151 this past week, a healthy increase over the previous week’s report of $18,420,632, up 9% compared to the same time last season with an overall 10% increase in attendance.

FALL LINEUP:
Rumors are in the air that a Broadway-headed production of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is in the planning stages.
