Over the past year, R&B singer Maxwell has been one of the touring industry’s shining stars as he sold out extensive legs of his on-going national tour. But now the acclaimed vocalist has joined the rank of artists that have axed their summer treks.

The soulful singer has postponed nearly a dozen dates of his 2010 spring and summer tour, which would have started afresh June 28 at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, and run through July 15 at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, MD.

Maxwell will reschedule the affected concerts for 2011 due to “scheduling conflicts with the venues,” according to his official Web site. New dates for the affected dates will be announced later this year, while refunds are issued for any tickets that have already been purchased.

The “Pretty Wings” crooner and his supporting acts, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, will finish the remainder of the late spring tour leg. That portion of the venture continues with a June 18 event at Verizon Center in Washington, DC, and wraps with a June 25-26 stand at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

The later dates had reportedly been added to Maxwell’s itinerary due to high demand for tickets to these earlier performance dates. Throughout the late 2008 and 2009 touring seasons, the singer had fared well in terms of ticket sales.

A summer 2009 press statement from Maxwell noted that all original dates of his fall 2008 tour — about 144,000 tickets, in all — sold out during the first day of onsales, prompting additional shows. The success of that venture, which signaled Maxwell’s return to the music industry after a long hiatus, led to heavy (and equally successful) touring throughout 2009.

But 2010 has proved to be a fickle season for many artists on the road.

Artists like Limp Bizkit and Christina Aguilera completely scrapped summer tour calendars in favor of later, yet-to-be-announced ventures because of logistical issues, such as venue size and rehearsal time. Others like U2 postponed rounds of touring due to health issues.
