Stone Temple Pilots (also known as STP) officially came into being in 1992, after the group’s original members tried out several other names. The band’s first album, “Core,” attained immediate success, reaching 8x platinum in the U.S. Over the next decade, STP produced four more studio albums, three of which reached at least platinum status. However, the group’s journey was anything but smooth; frontman Scott Weiland moved in and out of rehab, resulting in the cancellation of concert dates and even whole tours.
Stone Temple Pilots broke up in 2003, partly due to conflict over Weiland’s drug problem. However, STP reunited in 2008, and a compilation album simply titled “Buy This” was released, although it didn’t chart on the Billboard 200. The group launched a massive, six-month reunion tour in 2008, and they are planning a tour in late 2009 to support the release of their upcoming album.
