Green Day tour announces summer 'Breakdown' concerts

By Allison Reitz

Punk-rock trio Green Day has unveiled dates for its first full-length tour in three years to support the long-awaited release of "21st Century Breakdown." The 38-city North American tour kicks off July 3 in Seattle, WA, and concludes August 25 in Los Angeles, CA.

Other scheduled stops include a July 13 performance in Chicago, IL, a July 20 concert in Boston, MA, an August 8 show in Houston, TX, and an August 21 gig in Las Vegas, NV. Seven shows have also been booked for Canada from a July 4 show in Vancouver, BC, to a July 18 event in Montreal, QC.

Venues for the eight-week tour have not been announced yet. However, in early February, Rolling Stone reported that the summer tour would make a circuit of the nation's indoor arenas rather than the outdoor amphitheaters favored by touring artists during the summer months.

According to a statement on Green Day's official Web site, the current itinerary represents just the first leg of dates for the band. The statement also notes that the summer outing will end with "two shows in Los Angeles on August 26,"although the final show is currently marked for August 25. It is unclear whether the Los Angeles gigs will be scheduled for the same day or as a two-day stand.

Green Day will be touring behind the May 15 release of the group's eighth studio album, "21st Century Breakdown." The record is a follow-up to and continuation of 2004's Grammy Award-winning rock opera "American Idiot." The 2004 release hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, went Platinum five times in the U.S., and makes its stage debut as a musical later this year in Green Day's hometown of Berkeley, CA.

To prepare for the upcoming summer run, Green Day has staged a handful of surprise warm-up shows in the past couple of weeks at clubs across California. Vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tré Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt have also been playing live as a six-man outfit recently. Guitarist Jason White, keyboardist Jason Freese and guitarist Jeff Matika round out the on-stage lineup.
